Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MR, is the latest and most advanced method of diagnostic imaging.
It combines a powerful magnet, radio waves and a sophisticated computer to create highly detailed anatomical images of the body. Two major advantages are : first, that scanning can be performed in any plane within the body which greatly enhances the information that can be obtained and secondly, no x-rays are used.
When you arrive
A staff member will explain the procedure and ask you to fill in a Patient Safety Checklist.
Due to the strong magnetic field, some people may not be suitable for MR scanning. If you have the following, or any doubts about your suitability for MR scanning, please contact us before coming for your scan.

Heart, pacemaker or pacewires / neuro stimulator / cochlear implants |

Aneurysm clips - metal clips on blood vessels in the brain |

Metalic fragments in your eyes due to an accident (even if the accident happened 20 years ago). |

Early stages of pregnancy. |
Some items cannot be taken into the scan room, such as watches, keys, credit cards and hearing aids. Special lockers are available for these items.
Some people find it comforting to bring along a family member or friend to stay with them in the scan room. This person needs to fill out the safety checklist as well.
Preparation
You may eat and drink as normal before and after the scan, unless the MRI examination requires specific dietary restrictions and other instructions. In these situations the necessary instructions are provided by the receptionist in advance of the appointment. Continue with any medication prescribed by your doctor. You may be asked to change into a gown as some metal on clothing may interfere with the scans.
Relax while you Scan
MRI images are very sensitive to movement. By keeping very still during the scan, you can improve the quality of the images we obtain. The best way to keep still is to be relaxed, lying comfortably as if you were dropping off to sleep.
The scanner is open at both ends and there is two way communication possible at all times via an intercom.
There is a cool air fan inside the scanner for your comfort as well as a light.
During each scan, you will hear fairly loud tapping or drilling noises. This noise will last from 30 seconds to several minutes. The radiographer will tell you when these sounds are to begin and how long they will last. The radiographer will provide you with earplugs or headphones when they prepare you for the scan.
Will I feel anything?
MRI itself is a painless procedure. In some cases you may need a contrast injection. The contrast we use for MRI scans is considered very safe.
Occasionally, claustrophobia is a problem. If there is concern about this possibility, the MRI staff should be contacted in advance of the appointment for information and assistance.
MRI has been used to image patients since 1981 and no adverse biological effects have been reported from exposure to the magnetic fields or radio waves.
Afterwards?
On completion of the scan the Radiologist will study the images. The films and report are then sent to the referring doctor within 48 hours.
Should you need to cancel
If you are unable to keep your appointment please inform us as soon as possible so that we can accommodate someone else. |
